Dumfries House – East Ayrshire, south west Scotland

Dumfries House is one of Britain’s finest stately homes. This magnificent estate and 18th-century house with its unrivalled collection of distinctive furniture is set in 2,000 acres of grounds and offers something for everyone.

The Pit Hedging has a wide range of Yew in excellent quality. In 2016, these were used to create ‘The Maze’ at Dumfries House. The Maze is a custom-made maze of Yew plants that was opened in summer 2016.

Almost 2,000 pieces in the height of 200 cm were planted during construction and were mature enough to get lost in immediately. Over time, the hedges were developed to show off the labyrinth even better now.

The maze, with obelisks and a Japanese pagoda, was an idea of HRH Prince Charles, inspired by the extensive maze at Sandringham and his childhood visits there. It was designed by Fife landscape architect Michael Innes and the paths extend for more than half a mile.

The circular, almost symmetrical maze is located just southeast of Adam Bridge and has already welcomed 7,000 visitors – all of whom found their way out safely again.
